Horizons’ volunteer, Donna McKee, from the Church of Christ shares about her experiences serving in the soup kitchen.

Why do you volunteer at Horizons?   Because I feel Horizon is helping many people in our community.  I also enjoy working with the staff and the other volunteers.  There is a real sense of camaraderie among the staff and volunteers.  Everyone is caring and giving.

Why does our community need Horizons?   I believe Horizons is helping many people that are in need, people who’s need would otherwise be left unmet.  I believe many people in our community rely on Horizons to help them get a well balanced meal, as poverty drains the nutrition out of one’s diet.

Can you share a Horizons experience that is especially meaningful to you?   A young man and woman came in and told us they had not eaten for days.  We served them a meal, gave them prepared food to take home and food from the Horizons Food Pantry.  They were especially thankful and I was thankful that Horizons was there to help them.

What has surprised you most about working with Horizons?   Seeing the incredible paper writing service need that is out there and the support Horizons gets from our community.

What do you wish other people knew about Horizons?  All of the great things they are doing to help those who are in need.

What keeps you coming back to volunteer?   Knowing there is an incredible need.
